Family-Run Jewelry Store Closing After 40+ Years in Business; Big Sale Starts This Weekend

— May 2, 2025 – Portland, Oregon - For more than 40 years, Van Tin Jewelry has been an outstanding business in Portland. Chuc and Ong were immigrants from Vietnam when they opened their store in 1983. After decades in business, the family-owned store is closing its doors and celebrating its community legacy with a sale open to the public.

Going out of business sale

The sale opens to the public Saturday, May 3 and features a wide array of 14-karat to 24-karat gold, a large selection of diamonds along with jade, pearls and other gemstones in various styles that fit every budget. "We sell jewelry that holds its value. It's not what you’d typically find in commercial jewelry chains," said Robin Nguyen, store manager and daughter of the founders.

A storied history of service

For many customers, Van Tin Jewelry is more than just a store. "Van Tin" means very trustworthy in Vietnamese.
"My parents opened the store in 1983, and it has always been a family affair. My sister, brother, and I have all worked at the store in some capacity, and my brother is still the jeweler," said Robin Nguyen, who watched her family business grow over the years. She recently returned to manage the store after her sister retired.

Chuc Nguyen and Ong Vu, her parents, are passionate about business and they committed to opening their own store after immigrating to the USA. They previously owned a jewelry store in Vietnam.
Initially, they started with a small store on Broadway Street that sold fabric and had just a few jewelry cases. However, the jewelry side of the business became successful and eventually took over the entire store. They then moved to a larger location, where their store is now situated on NE Sandy Boulevard.

Generations of customers

"We're very connected to our customers - even when they move out of state, they still return to buy from us," said Nguyen. "We want everyone to feel welcome, whether they've shopped with us for years or whether it's their first time."
They have also served generations of families. "One of our greatest joys has been helping multiple generations of shoppers celebrate events such as weddings, anniversaries, births, and graduations. "It has been an honor to be a part of their stories," she said.

That sentiment is shared by several customer reviews on Yelp:

"We have been buying our jewelry here for over 20 years. Very friendly and professionally run. A great selection of high-quality jewelry at fair prices. An honest and helpful staff. Well worth a visit." wrote Mark M. from Portland.

"My mom has been coming here for years for our jewelry and the service is always so wonderful." said Maliku U from Vancouver.

"Incredibly friendly, fast, and hardworking. Love that it's family owned too. They resized my engagement ring along with some heirlooms from my late grandmother, and they did a lovely job. They made very sure I was happy with the work. I will definitely return!" said Lauren T. from Seattle.

Committed to the community they serve

“We are thankful for the support from our customers, many of whom have become good friends,” Nguyen said. “We hope people remember us not just for our jewelry, but for the relationships we've built,” she added.
